Beets: planting before winter - when and how
Beets are valuable for their taste and useful properties, therefore they are cultivated not only in private plots, but also on an industrial scale. The yield of this root crop largely depends on when the seeds were sown outdoors.
Each region has its own sowing dates and methods of growing beets. For example, in Siberia, most often, seedlings of this vegetable are first grown, and then transplanted into the garden, and in the middle lane, in Ukraine and in the south of the Russian Federation, beet seeds are sown directly into the soil, and in these regions, sowing of winter crop varieties is widespread, which in taste and quality are not inferior to summer varieties.
We'll tell you when to sow beets before winter in 2020 in warm and cold climates.
When to plant beets before winter
Sowing beets in winter is advisable for many reasons, including when summer is expected to be short. During the winter, the seeds in cold soil will harden, acquire resistance to cold temperatures, diseases and pests, swell, and in March or early April they will begin to actively germinate.

The best winter beet varieties are:
- Cold resistant,
- Polar flat,
- Red ball.
They are cold-resistant and do not shoot.
The only drawback winter beet is its low keeping quality.
Planting dates in 2020
Podwinter sowing of beets in open ground, depending on the local climate and weather, is carried out from October to the end of November, after the carrots are sown before winter. There is such a popular sign: if the leaves have fallen from the cherry, it's time to sow beets. You cannot rush to sowing: you must make sure that the soil is frozen to -4 ⁰C and that there will be no warming before winter.
The compilers of the lunar calendar consider two time intervals to be optimal for sowing beets in October: from 15 to 20 and from 22 to 27 number. The rest of the month is either unfavorable for planting or neutral.
In November, the periods are favorable for sowing beets. from 13 to 19 and with 21 to 25.
When is it better not to plant beets?
Do not, under any circumstances, throw seeds into the ground on the days of the Full Moon (October 2, 31 and November 30) and New Moon (October 16 and November 15). Unfavorable days for sowing beets in October are also periods from 1 to 4, from 6 to 13 and from 29 to 31. In November, it is not recommended to sow from 1 to 3, from 5 to 11 and from 27 to 30. On neutral days, sowing is possible, but in this case, the seedlings in spring can be thin and uneven.
Tips for planting beets in the fall
After what culture to plant
In the same place, beets can be grown only after three to four years. This crop grows well in areas where onions, clover, pumpkin, nightshade and legumes grew.
Do not sow beets after cabbage, chard, carrots, spinach, rapeseed and potatoes: these plants, like beets, need the same nutrients, and the predecessors can severely deplete the soil.
Preparing for planting, soil
You need to grow beets in an area that is constantly illuminated by the sun. Acidic and clayey soils are not suitable for this culture. You can neutralize the acidic environment and loosen the soil by digging it onto a shovel bayonet with lime, dolomite flour or wood ash.

During the digging, weeds, roots of previous crops must be removed from the ground and fertilized with humus at the rate of 3 kg for each m², ash or phosphates. If organic matter was introduced under a previous crop, you will not need humus.
In an area where groundwater is close, it is necessary to make elevated ridges for the beets with a height of at least 25 cm.
How to plant beets before winter
Smooth the surface, cut grooves in it 3 cm deep at a distance of 20 cm from each other, but do not bring them to the edge of the garden so that the melt water does not wash the seeds out of the soil.
The basic rule of winter sowing of any crop: dry seeds should lie in dry soil.
Divide the beet seed into grooves with a step of 10 cm and cover them with a previously prepared dry and warm soil mixture, consisting of equal parts of garden soil, sand and rotted compost. Mulch the surface of the bed with a layer of dry peat 3 cm thick. There is no need to water the planting. If you have very cold winters, lay a layer of sawdust, dry foliage or spruce branches on top of the mulch, and after a snowfall, throw a small snowdrift over the garden bed.
In the spring, as soon as the snow melts, the shelter from the garden must be removed so that the sprouts do not have to break through it. The surface should be slightly loosened, it is also advisable to water the bed with a solution of nitrogen fertilizer in order to accelerate the ripening of root crops by at least a week. Before the first shoots appear, keep the planting under the film.
Landing features in different regions
In Siberia the sowing of beets is usually carried out in the middle or at the end of October. If by this time snow has already fallen, it is swept away, grooves are made in the soil, dry seedlings are thrown into them and the grooves are sealed with dry soil, which must be stored in a warm room before sowing. Then they mulch the bed with peat, cover it with spruce branches and again throw snow on it.
In the middle lane beets are sown before winter most often in late October or early November. The seeding technology and scheme are described in the article. To cover the planting of beets in the Moscow region, as a rule, a layer of peat and snow cover is sufficient.
Sowing beets in Ukraine and in the south of the Russian Federation carried out according to the procedure described in the article from mid to late November, in warm autumn you can sow even in the first decade of December. Mulching the beds in these regions is necessary only in the case of a very cold and snowless winter.

How to plant spinach before winter
Spinach is a very cold hardy crop. Therefore, it perfectly tolerates winter frosts. Spinach is planted in late autumn in early November in frozen ground with dry seeds.
The spinach bed begins to be prepared in September. An elevated place is chosen for it, protected from direct northerly winds. The best precursors to this vegetable are cabbage or potatoes. Wells for sowing are prepared on the garden bed. They also prepare the soil for planting seeds. For this, a light sandy loam soil with the addition of peat or humus is better suited. Phosphorus or potash fertilizers are applied before planting. It is better not to overdo it with potash fertilizers, they lead to the formation of arrows on the spinach. Seeds are sown in holes and covered with prepared soil. Then the top of the garden bed is covered with straw or burlap before winter.
In the spring, after the emergence of shoots, the aisles are loosened and weeds are removed. Spinach is a very moisture-loving plant. Therefore, it requires regular watering. Also in the spring it is fed with ammonium nitrate at 30 grams per 1 sq. m., and the garden bed is sprinkled with mulch.
Throughout the growth of spinach, the garden is constantly loosened and weeded, and they also fight pests and diseases. With proper care, as early as May, winter crops of spinach will delight you with delicious greens. It is harvested entirely along with the root, or only the leaves are cut off. It is best to store spinach frozen in the freezer. So it can stay good for cooking for up to 2 months.
Beets: planting rules before winter
With the beginning of spring, so many things are accumulating on the site that there is simply not enough time and energy for everything. To make the work in the garden at least a little easier, you can plant some vegetables before winter: garlic, carrots, onions, and also beets. In addition, due to autumn sowing, the crop will ripen several weeks earlier.
What you need to know when planning to sow vegetables in the fall:
1. It is necessary to give preference to a variety that has resistance to unfavorable weather, that is, sub-winter. This nuance is indicated on the seed package.
2. Planting too early can cause the planting material to germinate and then freeze. It is necessary to choose a period when the soil will already freeze, the weather will no longer become warm. The approximate period is late October and early November.
The first snowfall is allowed before sowing. The main thing is that the soil does not freeze, because then it will be impossible to work with it.
Conditions for planting beets before winter:
1. The garden bed should be located in an open place so that it is not shaded by trees, buildings in the spring.
2. It is desirable that potatoes, tomatoes or peas were previously grown on the selected segment.
3. It is impossible to place a bed in a lowland, where water will stagnate in the spring. In this case, the seeds will simply rot instead of germinating. It should be on a hill or slightly sloped.
It is important to prepare the garden according to all the rules. It is advisable to do this in advance, otherwise the soil will freeze, then it will be too late to do this. And so that the rain does not wash out the area, you should cover the ground with a film.
How to prepare the site and plant beets in the fall:
1. Along with the digging, add organic fertilizer. For 1 sq. m. you will need about half a bucket of compost or manure. Ash, which contains potassium, does not hurt either. If the soil is acidic, it must be limed.
2. Make grooves about 5 cm deep. The distance between grooves should be 25-30 cm.
3. When the weather is right, sow the planting material, considering that about a third of the seeds will not sprout.
4. Sprinkle on top of the soil, press down slightly with your hands.
If the weather in winter is extremely harsh, it is advisable to cover the beet beds with straw, spruce branches or peat. When the snow falls profusely, it will not hurt to build a large snowdrift over the landings. This will prevent the seedlings from freezing, and also will not allow them to hatch as soon as the sun begins to shine, because they may die during subsequent frosts.
Knowing the peculiarities of planting beets in winter, it is very easy to grow a good harvest.
Do they plant beets or carrots before winter
Planting beets and carrots before winter allows you to get a harvest much earlier than if sowing was carried out in the spring. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that many gardeners prefer to plant these crops in late autumn. And for people living in the northern regions, where summer is rather short and cool, sowing before winter is the only way to get a harvest. In general, planting beets and carrots in the fall has its advantages:
- work carried out in the fall significantly saves time in the spring
- seeds planted in winter undergo a kind of hardening, acquire immunity to various diseases
- harvesting can be done much earlier.
Now with regard to planting crops. In autumn, it is better to sow certain varieties of beets and carrots, for example, from beets, preference should be given to the varieties "Podzimnyaya A-474", "Cold-resistant 19", "Egyptian flat", from carrots - "Tushon", "Canada", "Flakkoro" or others. It should be noted that the above varieties are ideal for planting in central Russia.
You should not rush to plant crops before winter. Since carrots are a thermophilic plant, and it takes a long time to sprout (up to 30 days), then it can be planted a little earlier - at the end of September, but beets are cold-resistant culture, they emerge in 5-8 days, so you cannot start sowing it earlier mid-October to mid-November. In general, for work, it is better to choose a period when dry weather is established with a temperature not higher than 6-8 degrees.
Well, in conclusion, it is worth noting: in order not to be disappointed in the harvest, the seeds of which are planted before winter, it is important to competently prepare the beds before sowing. Both cultures love loose sandy or loamy soil, and carrots grow well on slightly acidic or neutral soil, and beets - on neutral or slightly alkaline.
Coriander seed germination is limited to a couple of years. Also, only ripe seeds, the color of the shell of which is brownish-brown, are suitable for sowing. When growing cilantro from seeds, the planting material must be prepared - disinfected, no other pre-sowing measures are needed to increase germination. Disinfect with a warm, slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate (10-30 minutes). It is recommended to sow dry seeds in the soil.
When seed material is harvested independently from cultivated bushes, it is harvested until the second half of September, and after that all plants are completely removed from the beds. In the evening or in the morning, the bushes are cut at ground level, collected in bundles and hung. After 7-10 days, the material is ready - it can be used for spring-autumn plantings or in cooking. If the bushes are not removed from the beds, then the cilantro seeds that have fallen into the open ground will germinate the next year. Self-seeding of coriander is possible even in the climate of the northern regions.
Varieties of vegetables for winter sowing
Considering that when sown before winter, the seeds are in harsh conditions, they must have good germination, be large, full-bodied. Therefore, it is better to buy high-quality varietal seeds than to use your own - this is not the case when the savings are justified. You can purchase pelleted seeds: additional protection will reduce the risk of their death.
For winter crops, choose vegetable seeds especially carefully.
Choose varieties that, when exposed to low temperatures, do not form flower stalks or form, but a very low percentage of the total.
When to plant before winter
The main criterion for choosing the timing of planting a crop before winter is the climatic conditions in a particular region. In the southern regions, the timing can drag on until the calendar winter, in the northern regions, the winter planting has a very conditional name and begins in August. In addition, the choice of timing depends on the crop being planted.
- The earliest fall plantings are greens. In particular, start planting sorrel in late August or early September.
- In late September, early October, medium crops are planted. These include perennial and annual flowers, winter garlic, and onion sets.
- By the end of October, start planting beets, radishes and simple greens: dill and parsley must also be planted before November.
- The final stage of winter planting is tomatoes. Postpone their planting until the time when the weather is stable outside, on the verge of minus, since the presence of thaws can provoke the emergence of seedlings even before the beginning of winter.
In addition to the choice of the date, soil preparation, which includes the arrangement of high beds, fertilization and preliminary weeding of the beds, belongs to the rules for the autumn planting of crops. Compliance with these simple rules will help to successfully plant and grow selected crops in the garden and vegetable garden.
